Malcolm Watson is in Zambië gebore en het as kind saam met sy ouers na Suid-Afrika geëmigreer. Hier het hy sy eerste groep, The Statesmen, as tiener tydens sy hoërskooldae in Pietermaritzburg gestig. Na skool was hy vir 6 jaar lank lid van die supergroep, The Rising Sons, en het hulle gesorg vir treffers soos "How Do You Do" en "Going Down Jordan". Daarna sluit hy aan by die poprock-groep "The Music Corporation", wat na minder as 'n jaar ontbind. Hy begin toe 'n solo-loopbaan as sanger onder die naam MALLY, en reik sy eerste solus-sewe "Louie Louie" kort daarna uit. Na 'n paar jaar besluit hy om die sangwêreld vaarwel toe te roep, en meer agter die skerms te werk.

In 1980 besluit hy om 'n instrumentale plaat met sy gunsteling instrument, die kitaar, te maak. Dit was na aansporing van o.a. Clive Calder en Hansie Roodt, wat geweet het hoe briljant hy met die kitaar was. As gevolg van die feit dat hy nooit Afrikaans goed baas kon raak nie, en dat sy nuwe mark juis die Afrikaner sou wees, is besluit om 'n masker te dra en sy identiteit geheim te hou. En siedaar… die Kavalier was “gebore”! Op die manier kon hy radio- en ander onderhoude hokslaan, en dus nie nodig gehad om Afrikaans te gebruik nie. Na nege baie suksesvolle albums het sy gewildheid begin kwyn, en het hy aan die begin negentigs van die openbare toneel as kunstenaar verdwyn. Sy laaste groot openbare optrede as die Kavalier was tydens die 1989 "Keep-it-Country-show" by die Randse Skou in Johannesburg.
